I would note however that the ghastly middle classes have rather more ambivalent attitudes to violence than you seem to assume. . . but yeah, not bad.D.J.P. Really appreciate the international perspective, which gives us interesting references (Ingold on Sahlins for example) that have been mostly left out of this too-U.S.-centered debate. My main quibble was going to be about point #4, with regards to timing and research permits, but David B. Halmo has left a more detailed comment along those lines at my blog round-up on Chagnon. He wanted to leave it here but has been unable, so I post it below.
Cheers,
Jason
>>>
David B. Halmo
While an overall balanced treatment of the controversy and the issues involved. a couple of clarifications are warranted: My understanding is that the AAA rescinded its findings well before Dreger's analysis (my first knowledge of her involvement begins with her 2009 presentation to the AAA annual meeting, and her subsequent 2011 paper). The El Dorado report/findings were rescinded due to Thomas Gregor and Daniel Gross having introduced two ballot measures for AAA membership vote in 2004-2005. Secondly, just to clarify, Chagnon was denied research permits for fieldwork in Brazil and Venezuela long before the AAA investigation. Complaints from Brazilian and Venezuelan scholars and missionaries intensified following his 1988 paper in Science, and led to his being denied permits. Also, Chagnon's "forced early retirement" from UCSB was not "forced" in the sense that someone forced him out; he makes clear in his new book that he decided on his own to retire because he could no longer do fieldwork in Venezuela.Jason Antrosiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05012947323032077384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6874874825691097756.post-40845377158253539362013-03-15T17:04:32.938-07:002013-03-15T17:04:32.938-07:00Thanks - done! Thanks - done!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15277757756943801756noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6874874825691097756.post-18630331188531155302013-03-15T16:14:46.846-07:002013-03-15T16:14:46.846-07:00Thank you.
